Meet

Deanna Fierro

I want to work with you in creating schools that

Retain Educators,

Attract Families, and

Build Communities.

TEACHER. PARENT. NEIGHBOR.

In August of 2011, my daughter Jaclyn and I moved from Texas where I had earned my degree in Education from the University of Texas at El Paso.  We moved to Virginia to be closer to Jaclyn's father Shayron and his family. With the help of her father and his relatives, we learned to navigate the city and learned more about the history of Richmond, Virginia.

While Jaclyn attended Southampton Elementary School, I started my career as a public school teacher at

Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School. Three years later, I moved on to work at Albert Hill Middle School which Jaclyn was able to attend through open enrollment. We both immersed ourselves in the school's community and culture by participating in school programs and leadership roles. Today Jaclyn is a student at Appomattox Regional Governor's School where she is advancing her piano skills. I continue teaching for Virginia's public schools and just completed my Masters in Educational Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University this May.  For 7 years, I taught in RPS as a mathematics teacher with a demonstrated history of dedication, resourcefulness and goal-driven professionalism. My decision to leave the division two years ago was driven by my goal to run for school board in 2020.

Outside of the classroom, I continue to advocate for all of our students throughout the division and state. I helped organize the 2019 RedforEd march to the state Capitol, where alongside other educators, students and their families, we urged our legislators to increase public school funding. I regularly participate in community service by volunteering for city events that are inclusive of all RVA residents and children.  Recently, I was selected to be one of our district's school rezoning representatives where I advocated for a facilities plan that would address our overcrowded classrooms.

I am proud to call the 4th District my home and I want other families to feel the same way. Every resident in our district should be able to trust that decisions in our schools are made with a commitment to the social and academic growth and development of every child in every Richmond Public Schools classroom.

As your school board representative, I want to work with you in creating schools that

Retain Educators, Attract Families, and Build Communities.
